National Accounts at ONS
The National Accounts in Newport measure economic activity taking place within the United Kingdom. Data is presented in a sequence of accounts that shows production, consumption, and the accumulation of assets in the United Kingdom.
The National Accounts are produced by the National Accounts group (NAG); which is part of the Macroeconomics and Labour Market Directorate (MLD). The Divisions within NAG are currently located across two sites, Newport and London:
The Short-Term Output Indicators Division (STOID) in Newport produce:
- the first Quarterly estimate of GDP;
- Welsh short-term output indicators;
- monthly indices for the production, retail and service sectors of the economy.
The remaining National Accounts Divisions which are currently based in London produce:
- detailed expenditure and income accounts,
- Balance of Payments,
- Government Finance Statistics and a range of other statistics
Over the next four years, the 140 London based National Accounts posts will move to Newport.

You will learn how other ONS statistics are used to produce the Accounts and be able to apply economic theory and principles in the production of National Accounts. The National Accounts touch all aspects of economic, business and social statistics so your existing knowledge will help to strengthen and improve the quality of National Accounts outputs.
Training and support providing an Introduction to National Accounts and focusing on specific aspects of National Accounts concepts and methodology is available to all staff.
We are inviting applications to a range of posts and grades for people with the following skills, knowledge and experience:
- ability to analyse data, identify and address irregularities and discrepancies in data
- economics and or basic/statistical theory and its application
- awareness of the policy context for economic and social analysis
- good communication skills, the ability to build relationships and work within a team
- the opportunity to apply your leadership and management experience or to learn and develop in this area
