Dear Applicant,

Welcome to the Office for National Statistics. I am delighted you are considering joining us, and am confident that you'll find this a rewarding place to work.

Official statistics are very important in a modern society. They form the cornerstone for building sensible policies and making the big decisions that affect our everyday lives. They also enable the public to assess the performance of the Government, so it's vital that we in ONS and the Government Statistical Service more widely provide the best statistics to help get this right.

This is why we need able, dedicated and forward–looking statisticians, researchers and economists who can help us provide the information to shape a better society.

I started as a researcher back in 1974, and as I've worked my way up to lead this vital organisation, I have seen what we do become more valued and more widely recognised, both here and internationally.

ONS is about to enter an important new phase as we become independent of Ministerial control. I am, therefore, more excited than ever at the prospect of recruiting new specialists to work with our existing experts. Together, we can take forward a powerful ONS and Government Statistical Service to build on the work we have developed.

I welcome your application.

Karen Dunnell – National Statistician and Registrar General for England and Wales
