Economic Analyst

I decided on ONS after completing my Masters and hearing about their training opportunities. That was over four years ago and I haven’t been disappointed. So far, I’ve been on courses at the LSE, the Treasury and the Royal Statistical Society. Right now, I’m in the middle of a part-time MSc, which is fully funded by my department. ONS has provided a lot of support in my personal development.

When I joined, the first major project I took part in involved carrying out an economic analysis of over 23 industries in the service sector. I was really pleased with the results because my analyses (which were carried out single-handedly), identified new sources that are now being used to quality assure industries in the service sector.

I’m now a Macro Economic Analyst. I provide economic briefings to various branches within the organisation. I also spend a significant part of my time conducting economic research and have recently started co-running an Economics course for ONS employees. However, I think the best part of my job is doing economic research. Carrying out this research keeps me ‘mentally fit’ as I often have to refer to up-to-date textbooks and journals for information. It also means I have significant interaction with academics.

If I was to give someone one reason to join, it would be this: ONS provides excellent training opportunities for its employees in a flexible-working environment.
