About Haringey

Distinctive and diverse

Haringey is a distinctive and diverse borough, where outer London meets inner London. In little more than 11 square miles, you'll find around 225,000 people living here. Nearly half have ethnic minority backgrounds. Almost half of all pupils in Haringey schools speak English as an additional language - and in 2008 used over 160 languages at home.

Urban, suburban and industrial

Our borough is just as varied in its geography. In the west, there's wooded high ground - home to older more prosperous suburbs such as Highgate and Muswell Hill. To the east, there's flat, open low-lying land beside the River Lea - hosting an urban mix of modest working class houses, council estates and industrial buildings.

Outer or inner London?

By some definitions Haringey is classed as an inner London borough, by some definitions an outer London one. What's certain is that it offers something for everyone. Some of our more familiar local landmarks reflect this variety: they include Alexandra Palace, Bruce Castle, and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Our workforce

Haringey currently employs around 8,500 staff and provides a wide range of public services from education and housing to waste collection and recycling.

Haringey Forward is the Council's programme for internal change and improvement and is about enabling the delivery of flexible and efficient customer focused services by:

  • Creating a more modern, accessible and flexible working environment
  • Motivating, empowering and celebrating our people
  • Promoting fast, flexible and efficient working practices.

Our vision

The Council's vision is "...A council we can all be proud of."

To realise this vision, our Council Plan sets out our strategic priorities and what we aim to achieve over the next three years. It sets out how we will lead the borough forward and makes clear the parts of Haringey's sustainable community strategy the Council will deliver.

Our priorities

The Council's priorities are to:

  • A greener Haringey
  • A better Haringey
  • A thriving Haringey
  • A caring Haringey
  • Driving change, improving quality.
