Risk & Modelling

Risk and its management are at the centre of modern living. The purpose of this theme is to align actuarial mathematics, statistics, psychology, computer science and engineering to deal with mathematical and behavioural aspects of risk and uncertainty.

Our approach at Heriot-Watt is to capitalise on the outstanding talents we already have in actuarial mathematics, probability and other related disciplines that deal with uncertainty. A combined approach will encompass the quantitative behavioural and societal aspects of the problem and lead to practical solutions and mitigation strategies.

We will capitalise on the outstanding talents we already have in actuarial mathematics, probability and other related disciplines that deal with uncertainty and take an interdisciplinary effort which will allow us to tackle the real challenges of risk. Where, in the past, calculation and modelling of risk was largely a mathematical pursuit, a combined approach will encompass the behavioural and societal aspects of the problem and lead to practical solutions and mitigation strategies.

Major initiatives include:

  • Establishing FRAME - Financial Risk and Actuarial Modelling, Edinburgh - a major expansion of Heriot-Watt's world-leading actuarial and financial mathematics teaching and research, helping to understand quantitative risk and its managemant in financial services
  • Building on the University’s track record of high-impact research that applies probabilistic reasoning to assess and manage the risks that confront society in the modern world
  • Establishment of a major centre in Scotland for education and research on risk using our unique expertise in each relevant discipline, and the ways in which they interact
  • Promote the opportunities provided by an education in risk and modelling. Many careers such as investment fund management already require such skills
